Category: How-to Guides
Learn how to set up your Hyperkin M64 ModRetro console for the best N64 HDMI experience, from unboxing to 4K gameplay.
Quick Answer
Connect your Hyperkin M64 ModRetro to your TV via HDMI, insert an original N64 cartridge, and power on. Adjust display settings like CRT filters or overclocking in the on-screen menu for the best experience.
Why Use the M64 Over Other N64 HDMI Solutions?
The Hyperkin M64 ModRetro is a complete console replacement, not a mod or adapter. It plays original N64 cartridges and works with original controllers, giving you the most accurate gameplay timing and audio without modifying your old hardware. Unlike many HDMI adapters, the M64 supports output up to 4K resolution and includes built-in CRT filters and overclocking modes for customization.
One trade-off: the M64 doesn't support Nintendo 64DD or other add-ons, and it can't play ROMs directly. If you need those features, consider a software emulator or a modded original console.
M64 Setup Steps
- Unbox and Connect Power: Remove the M64 from the box. Plug the included USB-C power cable into the console and a 5V/2A USB wall adapter (not included). Connect the HDMI cable from the console to your TV. Use a power adapter that supplies at least 2A; a phone charger may cause instability.
- Insert an N64 Cartridge: Open the cartridge slot door on top of the M64. Insert an original N64 game cartridge firmly until it clicks. Close the door. Do not force a cartridge in backwards. The slot is keyed to only fit one way.
- Power On and Select Input: Press the power button on the front of the M64. On your TV remote, select the HDMI input corresponding to the port you used. You should see the M64 boot screen within seconds. If no signal appears, double-check the HDMI cable connection and ensure the TV is on the correct input.
- Configure Display Settings: Press the Menu button on the M64 or your controller to open the on-screen display. Adjust resolution (1080p or 4K), enable CRT filters for a retro look, or try overclocking modes for smoother performance in demanding games. Some games may show graphical glitches at 4K; drop to 1080p if you encounter issues.
- Connect and Play with Original Controllers: Plug your original N64 controller into one of the four controller ports on the front of the M64. The console supports rumble paks and memory paks. Start your game and play. Third-party controllers may work but are not guaranteed. Stick to official N64 controllers for best compatibility.
