Compare Hyperkin RetroN 2 HD and RetroN 3 HD retro consoles: features, trade-offs, and which one fits your classic gaming setup.
Quick answer
For NES/SNES fans on a budget, the RetroN 2 HD offers excellent value. If you also play Sega Genesis games, the RetroN 3 HD is the better choice.
What each console plays
The RetroN 2 HD supports NES, Super NES, and Super Famicom cartridges (NTSC/PAL). The RetroN 3 HD adds Sega Genesis compatibility, making it a true three-in-one system. If your collection includes Genesis titles, the RetroN 3 HD eliminates the need for a separate console.
HD output and aspect ratio
Both consoles output at 720p HD and include an aspect ratio switch for 4:3 or 16:9 display (HD cable only). This means classic games look crisp on modern TVs without stretching or distortion. The trade-off is that neither supports 1080p or 4K upscaling.
Controllers and accessories
The RetroN 2 HD comes with two premium wired controllers styled after classic designs (Cadet and Scout). The RetroN 3 HD also includes two wired controllers but styled differently. Both consoles include an HD cable and a Micro charge cable. Note that the RetroN 3 HD's controller styles may not match the exact feel of original controllers, which could matter for purists.
